Dr. Shelden L. Martin was born and raised in Lancaster, PA. He went on to attend LaSalle University in Philadelphia, where he received his undergraduate education. He received his BA, majoring in chemistry and minoring in biology. While at LaSalle, he was co-captain of their NCAA Division I wrestling team and also participated in intramural football. He studied abroad in 1997 at the prestigious University of Melborne in Melbourne, Australia participating on the intramural Australian Rules football team and table tennis teams. He graduated cum laude and with General University Honors from LaSalle University.
After college, Dr. Martin received the Gund Raiffe Fellowship to perform genetic and molecular biology research at the University of Pennsylvania on a rare genetic bone disease "fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva." His work helped localize and isolate the gene for this disease and was featured on CBS's documentary "20/20." Dr. Martin then received his medical degree at Georgetown University School of Medicine, prior to completing his orthopedic surgery residency training at Loyola University Medical Center in Chicago, IL.
Dr. Martin went on to complete subspecialty orthopedic fellowship training in sports medicine with OrthoCarolina at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC. During this year Dr. Martin participated in approximately 600 surgeries for shoulder, elbow and knee disorders. His training focused on complex shoulder and elbow joint replacement, arthroscopic ligament and tendon reconstruction, and cartilage restoration for professional and recreational athletes. As part of the team medical staff, he worked with professional, college, and high school level athletes, including the NFL's Carolina Panthers, MLB's Charlotte Knights (AAA), NASCAR's Joe Gibbs Racing, University of North Carolina, and Davidson College. He also served as the head team physician for Phillip O. Berry Academy of Technology High School. Dr. Martin also worked extensively performing research in the areas of ACL reconstruction outcomes and shoulder arthroscopy.
Dr. Martin is currently a resident member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and a fellow member of the Arthroscopy Association of North America. In his free time, he enjoys photography, scuba diving, golfing, working out and spending time with his wife. He has previously worked as a certified personal fitness training and has competed in both amateur bodybuilding and triathlons. He also enjoys community volunteering and has gone on several medical mission trips to Nairobi, Kenya and Mexico City. |
